Warranties
Unfortunately, roofing warranties can be a bit of a “game”. When you look at the warranties on traditional shingles, they are perhaps the only warranty of something you will buy where you know that the product will never last as long as the warranty. Imagine if someone told you that your new flat screen television with a one-year warranty would “wear out” before the warranty is up? Or what about your new car and its three-year warranty?
Asphalt shingle manufacturers provide long warranties but then build all sorts of limitations and exclusions into them. Things like:
- Proration – the older the roof is, the less warranty coverage you have. (Sometimes this declines very rapidly, even to 50% within 10 years or less.)
- Limitations based upon weather conditions, maintenance, and how the product was installed including the condition and design of your home.
- Transferability – many warranties transfer only one time if at all.
