Asphalt / Fiberglass Shingles

PROS

  • Low initial cost
  • Fits design-wise within most neighborhoods
  • Easy to find installers

CONS

  • Does not upgrade a home’s value or beauty
  • Prone to streaking and staining
  • Granules wear off and oils evaporate, leading to deterioration
  • Heavy and expensive to transport
  • High oil content
  • Not sustainable – requires replacement materials and labor
  • Few options for energy efficiency
  • Should solar be installed, the shingles probably won’t last as long as the solar installation
  • Long-term warranties that mislead consumers into thinking the roof will last that long
  • Should not be installed over existing shingles
  • Less walkable and hail-resistant with age
  • Require landfill disposal
