Energy Efficiency

Many homeowners do not realize the impact that roofing has on their home’s energy performance and utility costs. However, in hot weather, the roof absorbs heat from the sun which is then transferred into the attic and eventually makes its way into the living space, making the home less comfortable and increasing the need for air conditioning.

A quality metal roof, though, provides the following types of energy efficiency:

  • Special “cool pigments” that reflect the sun’s radiant heat, even in dark colors. Many of these roofs are Energy Star rated.
  • Metal roofs with integral air spaces, such as you find with metal shingles, create a thermal break which stops the conductive transmission of heat from the roof’s surface to the roof decking.
  • Ventilation can create convective air flow in the attic, drawing ambient air in at the bottom of the roof and exhausting out warmed air at the peak.
